Shannon attwater

I am a registered psychologist with a Bachelor of Social Science (Psychology)(Honours) who loves dogs* (and cats, and birds, and goats, and capybaras...you get the picture) and has a passion for working with people from all walks of life. Over the past three years, I have worked with children, adolescents, and adults in private practice. Prior to that, I worked as a mental health support worker for two years and as a research assistant at the Adolescent Risk Research Unit of University of the Sunshine Coast.

My approach to therapy is person-centred and client-led, meaning that I work collaboratively with my clients to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to their unique needs and goals. I practise from a humanistic, neurodiversity affirming framework and use interventions from a range of therapeutic modalities to support my clients in achieving their desired outcomes.

As a member of the LGBTQIA+ community, I have a particular interest and passion for working with individuals within this community. I strive to create a safe and inclusive space for all of my clients, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity.

Three things to know about me are that I value honesty and authenticity in all aspects of my life, which is clear in my clinical work. Additionally, I am proudly queer, and my personal experiences have informed my approach to therapy. Finally, I am a self-proclaimed geek, and I enjoy incorporating my love of pop culture and my client's geeky interests into my clinical work.

I hold current membership with both AusPATH and AAPi, and have previously served on the committee of The Psychology of Diverse Bodies, Genders and Sexualities Interest Group of the Australian Psychological Society.

I believe that therapy is not just for those who are unwell, but also for those who want to flourish and grow. If you're ready to take the first step towards a more fulfilling life, I'm here to support you.

* Sadly, this is not my dog and therefore won't make any impromptu guest appearances in your sessions. I do welcome guest appearances from your animals, but please check before bringing them into the clinic

I hold general registration as a psychologist, and I am also a member of the Australian Psychological Society (APS) and the Australian Association of Psychologists Inc (AAPi).

I work primarily with adults and my areas of passion are working with the autistic and transgender communities, as well as those exploring self and identity more broadly.

I'm fond of a modern therapy approach and acknowledging I am a person rather than a blank slate - while you lay back on a couch. You'd still be welcome to lie down if you wanted though. A comfortable space is the aim, and you meeting the needs you identify in your body as they arise is encouraged. Should the discussion move into difficult areas, let's at least make sure you're sitting (or lying) comfortably. In general, my goal is to offer a welcoming environment where you feel safe and able to talk freely.

In my experience, therapy works best when it's a collaborative process. What I bring to our session is my professional training and therapeutic skills, to complement your expertise on your life and experiences. While I bring my professional training and therapeutic skills into our sessions to complement your own expertise on your life and experiences. The most important part of our work together will be crafting a path that feels right for you, and this will likely draw from a variety of evidence-based techniques.
